Where to live?

We are on the hunt for a job... there are plenty to be had outside of Utah and Idaho, so it's really more a matter of us deciding where to live and Fisher deciding exactly where he wants to work... We are looking at Oregon, Washington, and Arizona and I have just a few criteria for the locations : )
- within a days drive (less than 10 hours of either Salt Lake or Rexburg)
- Family friendly, small town feel, safe, good schools
- Not too hot (though I realize, I am not likely to find this in AZ)
- Clean air with nice scenery for outdoor activities

So - anyone have any suggestions? We are very open to them : )

Washington DC is only a 4 hour drive from both SLC and Rexburg. And don't you have such fond memories of that journey? :)

Well, it's less than a four-hour drive if you fly. sigh!

I don't think the mountainous part of Arizona is too bad in the summer, and they get snow in the winter (Show Lo, Flagstaff, etc).

I'd vote for the Oregon coast, but that's because I love that part of the country. I think it's more than 10 hours drive away, though.

My sister lives in Walla Walla, WA, but the western part of WA and OR is pretty dry.

I think you're on the right track, though.

Haha- I concur with the Washington, DC comment. You didn't stipulate that no flying was involved...

But, you also know how we love Oregon. Great hospital for Dr. Fisher in Tualatin; NW Portland is nice (near the mission home); and I'm sure Jill has some other favorite spots. You're an hour from the coast, have an international airport, and it's 730 miles to Rexburg / 765 miles to SLC. (Jill and I did the Rexburg-Portland run in about 8-9 hours - not sure what this 11 hr business from Google Maps is... ;-) )

Anyway - good luck!

Flagstaff, AZ is more moderate than the rest of the state (from what I've been told). I'd spring for Oregon, no sales tax, beautiful country, closer to Idaho, but maybe that's just my thing (I want to move to Oregon so bad!)

Oh yes, Washington DC would be so fun! Maybe if they doubled his salary that would work : )

I was going to write a suggestion but JErb took mine! I vote the greater Portland Area.

OH boy. I remember doing this. And we ended up picking something that didn't exactly fit all our criteria . . . but I think it will turn out well. Good luck! This is a big job. If you ended up in Dallas, we wouldn't mind one bit. ;) We're in Rexburg now, by the way, until November. Look us up next time you're around.
